Advances in Technology Change Musical Expression

The latest technological advances have made creating music easier. Being a one-man/woman band and having your own recording studio at your disposal is possible now that digital technology has come about.

Burning your own original music CD is not just a dream for amateur musicians: In this day and age it is a reality. The pursuit of a musical career is not limited to only the musicians who can afford studio time. Virtually anyone with a spare room and the time and patience to learn home recording techniques can pursue their musical career without a lot of money.

I have been dabbling in home recording for a few years now and I'm constantly amazed how an ordinary woman like me can produce my own CD's. Using a keyboard I can perform all the songs myself, record all the tracks using an inexpensive digital multitrack recorder, perform vocals using a condenser microphone, and use a home stereo system to monitor my recordings. Granted, my recordings lack the professional quality that commercial music requires, but they do make adequate demos and certainly allow me to lay down my tracks (I do not notate) since spontaneous composition is my method of musical expression.

How we listen to music has also changed dramatically over the years. Say goodbye to those old cassette decks; the CD recorder and player has taken over the market enabling music lovers to enjoy the highest quality of recorded music.

Most recently, the ipod has made it possible to store a multitude of songs, creating a personalized playlist of the listener's favorite tunes. Plug it in and listen in your car, listen while jogging or walking, or listen to tunes on your computer while you work, anytime or anywhere.

Yes, some of the new gadgets, like the ipod, can be pricey. But, the convenience of having music at your disposable anytime you wish is worth the money invested.

Whatever your interest in music is, be it playing, composing or simply listening, technology has certainly changed the way we enjoy music.
